The Unsung Heroes of Friday Night Lights

By Cindy Green, Candidate for VA House of Delegates, District 44
These heroes don’t get write-ups in the sports section, but I’m going to write about them here.
I’ve had the great pleasure of campaigning at some of the most American places you’ll find in Southwest Virginia…Friday night high school football games. You want to meet the community? Go stand beside a chain-link fence and talk to folks in the bleachers. That’s what I’ve been doing.
At the last game I attended, I saw something that hit me right in the heart. It wasn’t the game, though our local boys played hard. It wasn’t the cheerleaders either, though they sure brought the energy. What caught my eye was the volunteer rescue squad…uniformed, standing by their ambulance, watching quietly like Guardian Angels from the end zone, ready to help our kids, our grandkids, the moment they’re needed.
Now that is what I call American.
These men and women volunteer their time to be there for us, no lights, no sirens unless something goes wrong. They show up anyway. Just in case. Just to serve.
And I started thinking. We’ve got heroes like that all over District 44. Volunteer firefighters. Rescue squads. 9-1-1 personnel. Emergency room nurses and techs and doctors at our local hospitals, not big-city systems, but our hometown hospitals, the ones we’re lucky to still have.
So here’s my message: the best way I know to honor these unsung heroes is to fight like hell for them in Richmond.
That means funding. Bring our tax dollars back home to Southwest Virginia. Not just to keep the lights on, but to make sure they’ve got what they need to do their job right. To train. To respond faster. To stay safe while they’re keeping us safe. That means making sure our local hospitals stay open, not just scraping by, but improving, upgrading, saving more lives, our lives.
These folks don’t do it for money. They do it because they care. My job, if I’m elected as your Delegate, is to make sure someone in Richmond cares about them, too. I won’t be working for the folks writing big campaign checks. I’ll be working for our heroes. And for you.
And I’ll work harder than anyone else to do it. That’s my promise to you. For your vote, I’ll be known as the hardest working Delegate in Richmond, fighting for our rescue workers, our hospitals, our schools, and our working families every single day. And I will not stay quiet while other politicians cut their funding, jeopardize our local hospitals! For our children’s health and safety, my actions, my voice will be heard loudly and clearly!
To every volunteer EMT, every firefighter pulling a night shift after a full day at work, every nurse in the ER at 3 a.m., thank you. You may not be in the paper, but you’re the kind of story I want to tell. And the kind of people I’ll go to Richmond to fight for.
